Abstract: The "Cogito ergo sum" places us in the rationalism of Descartes, from which the enlightened with Immanuel Kant will lead. In contrast, Romanticism with Herder considers that reason is not a priority in the construction of the individual, but first are the senses, then the fantasy and third reason. Here is the contrast between geometric reason and dialectical reason. Through the evolution of pedagogy, these terms are debated until they reach the followers of the Escuela Nueva, who are committed to romantic principles. And so we get to the present day, where the freedom of the "Volo ergo sum" (I am the one that wants to be). In this context, global experts, including UNESCO and the OECD, believe that the New School based on Romanticism is better suited to the needs of 21st century education.
