Abstract: The geopolitical landscape of the world is changing. The economic power is moving away from Europe and North America to move towards Asia, and specifically, towards the South China Sea and its islands: the Spratly Islands and the Paracel Islands. A large quantity of goods (mainly energy), which are of great importance for the world economy, pass through this geographic space. This circulation of goods is causing tensions over the sovereignty of the maritime space. The current problem in this territory is fruit of the need of each of the actors to consolidate their territorial and maritime domain. The different actors that intervene in the conflict are: United States, China, the Philippines, Vietnam, Malaysia, Brunei, Japan and Taiwan. The South China Sea has become a neuralgic zone for security, prosperity and development within the East Asian region. Disputes in this sea are seen as a source of tension and instability within the region. While peace has been maintained so far, the South China Sea is the epicenter of changes in the international balance of power which has the potential to trigger a military conflict that can transcend regional borders.
