Abstract: | The unilateral spatial neglect is a condition which disables the capability of paying attention to sensory stimuli in the contralateral region to the hemisphere damaged by a cerebrovascular stroke, thus, ignoring different stimuli that happen in such space. The affected brain areas that contribute to this disorder mostly belong to the parietal cortex. Currently, there are many efficient treatments for the rehabilitation or compensation of unilateral spatial neglect. The objective of our systemic review is to find the most relevant current therapies starting ten years ago. It has been found that optokinetic stimulation, prism adaptation, transcraneal magnetic stimulation and virtual reality therapy are foundational to rehabilitation of patients suffering from unilateral spatial neglect at the moment. The abovementioned therapies proved to be efficient in spite of the etiology and location of the damage, as well as the rest of the characteristics of the patient. Therefore, we could state that any of the four therapies would be a good procedure for unilateral spatial neglect. A proposition for neuropsychological intervention of a patient diagnosed with unilateral spatial neglect is in turn presented. The intervention has been carried out by means of low frequency transcraneal magnetic stimulation together with behavioral and cognitive rehabilitation. A maintenance intervention using virtual reality therapy has been proposed. |
