Title: Les ràdios lliures en el procés de normalització lingüística a l'espai català de comunicació (1977 - 1989)
Author: Camps Durban, Eloi

Abstract: This essay shows how free radios contributed to the process of linguistic extension of Catalan language in media in the 1977-1989 period. Citizen initiative was a prominent force in the construction of the media system in the Catalan space of communication from the 1970s onwards. One of its main exponents were free radios. These stations were, despite their limitations, a first attempt to put in practice linguistic normalization in local media: civil society, facing the lack of media in their language, directly took part to constitute their own communicational projects. Thanks to free radios, Catalan recovered a portion of normalized presence in the frequency modulation airwaves, at a time when it had little public exposure and did not receive much institutional and commercial support.
