Abstract: | The 1842 Treaty of Nanking between the Great Britain and the Qing Empire represented the starting point of the diplomatic relations between Europe and China. A few years later Spain deployed consular agents in the main Chinese ports. This article analyses the Spanish diplomatic establishment in China and its aims, and it reveals that despite possessing an apparently consistent consular system, it did not succeed in its objective of promoting Spanish trade in China and providing prestige to Spain in the Chinese colonial scenario. The reason for this lack of success was far beyond the control of the Spanish diplomatic representatives. Moreover, the article reflects on the role that powers that can be considered peripherals within the imperial enterprise played in the development of unconventional colonial formations in China at the end of the nineteenth century and the beginning of the twentieth. |
