Abstract: | Plant-based diet interest and followers have grown exponentially in recent years, nowadays there are more athletes who are open about being vegans, so followers of a plant-based diet. The aim of this dissertation is to show that following a plant-based diet is totally suitable to achieve high level of performance, as well as enquire if a vegan diet has any negative nutritional impact on exercise performance or if it would be necessary to follow any supplement intake. This meta-analysis has been made by using Pubmed as a platform to search and select the most relevant articles, according to the search topic of this dissertation. As a result of the articles selection and analysis, the scientific evidence shows that following a perfectly planned vegan diet, does not result in any kind of major nutrient deficit or cause negative impact to developing optimum exercise performance. There is just one strictly necessary micronutrient supplement, which is vitamin B12. In addition to vitamin B12, creatine and/or a blend of plant-based proteins are two other supplements to be considered for use as an option depending on the specific needs of the athlete. Therefore, it could be concluded that a properly planned vegan diet is suitable for fuelling all types of exercise regime, and as such it would be a valid option for any individual, including athletes. |
