Abstract: This doctoral thesis explores how the use of learning analytics affects teachers and students in higher education. It lays out the design and implementation of a web-based learning analytics tool that facilitates teachers' access to information for monitoring and assessing asynchronous online discussions, a type of collaborative learning activity in which students interact with each other to co-construct meanings through dialogue and reflection. Given the complexity of assessing collaborative learning and the information needs of teachers in online environments, this research presents a list of key factors related to the process of communicative interaction, defined by teachers and assessed by this new tool.
