Title: (In)autenticidad existencialista en tiempos de redes sociales

Abstract: This Master's Thesis aims to study the concept of authenticity as it was conceived in the existentialist philosophy of the twentieth century and apply it to today's world, in which social networks play a major role. Specifically, the text starts with a general review of authenticity and expands its exposition with the contributions of two existentialist thinkers: Jean-Paul Sartre and Albert Camus. Then, these existentialist themes, such as freedom, responsibility, Sartre's 'bad faith' or Camus' 'rebellion', are put in dialogue with some of the problems associated with the use of social networks studied by contemporary authors such as Sherry Turkle, Jaron Lanier and Kate Eichhorn. After this analysis, it is concluded that certain uses of digital platforms can hinder the search for authenticity; specifically, this is the case when they are used to escape existential anguish through the construction of simplified, comfortable and sometimes completely distorted identities and realities. The research is framed within a broader academic controversy, namely the debate between determinist and constructivist theories of technology. Existentialism, due to its clear emphasis on human freedom and responsibility, is aligned with technological constructivism, which, in the specific field of social networks, translates into a view of users as active agents capable of resisting mainstream trends and inventing new uses. This perspective implies that, while social networks are often used inauthentically, they can also serve the opposite purpose, i.e., to facilitate the achievement of existentialist authenticity.
