Abstract: Assumptions about the presence of symbolic behavior in previous contexts in the European Upper Pleistocene and the African Middle Stone Age have led to an intense debate in the archaeological literature reflected in the archaeological record of the last two decades. We present in this paper a compilation of archaeological data susceptible of a symbolic interpretation in archaeological contexts of Neanderthal populations and anatomically modern humans. Due to the implication and importance linked to the origins of modern behavior to the phenomenon of symbolism at present, we can observe an emerging amount of data that contrasts the epistemological positions exposed in previous decades. The evidence presented here shows a dialectic present between the two populations of hominins polarized in the form of innovation/acculturation that seems to be fading towards a richer, more varied and complex biocultural scenario. The selection of our research has been based on a variability of artifacts closely related to body and ornamental decoration as elements that allow us to indirectly infer data of sociocultural character of the populations and that could be linked to identity markers in the form of social differentiation, sense of aesthetics or ethnic identity. In a final section we incorporate ethnographic data from African hunter-gatherer communities in order to illustrate the inferences made on the archaeological record suggesting the use of ornamentation for the materialization and transmission of abstract ideas as a transcultural practice that characterizes human beings.
