Abstract: The concept of "sustainable development", born in the 1970s, is an uncertain term used by the capitalist system to reinvent itself and adapt to the language of the 21st century. The mutation of capitalism towards the discourse of sustainability allows it to survive, feed back and sustain itself through its deceptive rhetoric. The socio-environmental crisis we face is considered one of the most urgent issues of our society, along with the unjust distribution of power and wealth, and phenomena such as globalization and migration. Universal Expos are one of the mechanisms used by capitalism for the demonstration of power of nation-states and represent an alliance between economy and power of the countries of the global north. The Dubai Expo 2020 is a phenomenon on the borderline between the sustainable and the capitalist; an event that has served to emphasize the importance of sustainability at the global level and to convey the "redefined" and "reformulated" values of sustainable development by the capitalist system, through raising public awareness of the need for immediate action. This paper aims to critically analyze the case of the Dubai Expo 2020 and thus emphasize the need for change through alternative cases of the exhibition model. It aims to address the issue of the current environmental crisis generated by the capitalist system, through the analysis of the Universal Exhibitions as a case study, and finally, the search for artistic alternatives with sustainable themes.
