Abstract: The education system faces the challenge of including students with a wide variety of support needs, and in this process educational psychologists must be able to guide the implementation of universal support measures in schools. The present study aims to identify key aspects in the physical design of early childhood education classrooms precisely for this purpose. A narrative review of 18 sources (15 articles and 3 books or chapters) is carried out, gathering the main contributions regarding visual stimuli, available objects, furniture, safety and flexibility of the space, and the effects of these variables on the attention, learning and student behavior. The review confirms that the existing literature on this subject is abundant, that all these variables have an impact, with different size effect, on student performance, and that many of the aspects that should be taken into account are well known. Finally, a structured summary of the criteria that emerge from the review is provided, and the need to implement these proposals in schools and to continue studying their effects in future studies is emphasized.
