Author: Mazo Fernández, María

Abstract: Presentation of the patient. The fictitious case of a 14-year-old woman who was diagnosed with borderline intellectual disability with insufficient verbal competence at the age of 11 and presented atypical facial features is presented. She was adopted by a Spanish family at 10 months old. Possible case of Fetal Alcohol Syndrome. Description of the pathology. Fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS) is a disease that affects newborns (RN) of mothers who have drunk alcohol during pregnancy. The worldwide prevalence of APS is between 0.09% and 0.023%. The neurological alterations in APS manifest in multiple ways, from a low intellectual level, learning disorders, fine motor skills and balance problems, to behavioral problems, anxiety or depression. Evaluation results. The patient presents a global cognitive capacity that is well below what is expected for her age, as well as in attentional, linguistic, visual-constructive tasks or those related to executive functions. The information obtained in the tests and questionnaires suggests difficulties of an attentional-executive type, which could be having an impact on the difficulties in the learning and reading processes. Intervention objective. Reduce cognitive, behavioral and emotional difficulties, as well as optimize their functioning in the academic and family environment. Description of the intervention. A 9-month rehabilitation program is proposed. During this period, two weekly sessions will be held alternated with weeks of one session. Altered functions will be worked on with computerized and paper exercises, as well as games and relaxation techniques.
