Title: La institucionalización de niñas, niños y adolescentes en el Sistema de Protección a la Infancia y Adolescencia: ¿es un parche o una solución beneficiosa? Revisión bibliográfica

Abstract: The number of institutionalized children and teenagers (NNA) is exorbitant, both in Spain and around the world. Furthermore, the data are not favorable for this population, showing a higher rate of problems and negative effects in their lives. The purpose of this research is to understand to what extent institutionalization itself is harming these NNA. For this, I have tried to identify the adverse psychosocial effects it produces through a bibliographic review. After carrying out different searches, I obtained 387 articles in total, of which only 10 passed all the requirements to be accepted in my research. The data provided by these 10 studies, both quantitative and qualitative, are quite pessimistic with the intervention carried out in residential care centers for minors. We found several large deficits that worsen the prognosis of this population: academic, social, emotional, and psychological problems, as well as delays in physical and cognitive development, cognitive impairments and high-risk substance consummation and maladapted behaviors. Although it is difficult to discern between the effects of previous experiences and institutionalization itself, most studies indicate that the effects of institutionalizing are detrimental to NNA. Finally, these results show us the importance and urgency of implementing multiple improvements within the intervention of the Child and Adolescent Protection System. Besides, appropriate procedures should therefore be established to increase the rate of foster care for these NNA, since it is the most beneficial option for them.
