Abstract: Colloquial language has a great presence in audiovisual fiction and plays a key role in characterizing the characters and bringing naturalness and authenticity to dialogs. However, translating this kind of language and adapting it to subtitles can involve certain difficulties, not only because of the linguistic and cultural differences between both languages but also because of the space and time restrictions posed by subtitling. This study aims to determine the extent to which the register and semantic load reflected in the original version are transferred to the target language when subtitling colloquial language. Therefore, a theoretical framework is established, in which the concepts of subtitling and colloquial language as well as their main features are explained. Afterwards, an analysis of the translation techniques used in the subtitles of linguistic colloquial elements present in the Canadian sitcom Workin’ Moms is carried out. Finally, the impact that the use of these techniques has had on the final result is evaluated.
