Other Titles: M/M Romance and sport: an analysis of playing offiside, by Jax Calder
Author: Cerri, C.
Tutor: Martínez-Carrasco, Robert
Abstract: M/M romance is a product of the romance novel, fanfiction involving male characters from media sources (slashfic), Japanese manga involving queer male characters (Boy's Love), and also the selfpublishing industry which has also helped to promote the growth of the genre. In this study we carry out an analysis of Playing Offside, an M/M sports romance novel. The analysis has been divided into three separate studies. In the first study, we will analyze whether the essential components of the romance genre described by Regis (2003) are applied in this book. In the second one, we will examine the different tropes in the story taking into account the tropes defined by Hilt (2021, 2023). Finally, the third study will require delving into the problems of LGBTQ+ athletes. Issues such as internalized homophobia and fear of discovery among others will be discussed. In conclusion, after having carried out the three studies, we have been able to verify that all the elements of romance novels are, in fact, used in the book. In addition, the story contains a number of tropes regularly used in the romance genre. Furthermore, the categories chosen to analyze LGBTQ+ athletes and its representation in sport are also reflected in the story.
