Abstract: Free software is no longer the exclusive domain of computer experts. Most Internet users know about the Firefox web browser or the OpenOffice.org suite, and many use them every day. But in the ICT sector, free software applications have been used for many years for a number of reasons: technical quality, absence of license fees, security, technological independence, etc. In some sectors, such as public bodies or education, the freedoms that free software guarantees are specially important. In this article we present a brief history of the technological and ideological aspects of the free software movement. We discuss what is free software and why it is important for users, from the technical, economical and social points of view.
