Abstract: Public administrations have become one of the major users and promoters of free software. Saving license costs, promoting local industry, use of local languages out of social interest and not strictly commercial, promoting an information and knowledge society based on free technology and open standards are some of the areas which have generated debate in the heart of the public administrations, and which still remain wholly valid. This article looks at some of the main projects and initiatives involving free software and public administrations, focussing on Spain but taking into account certain international regulations and studies, to give a wider view of the whole area.
