Abstract: Since the construction of the very first railway lines, one of the most important decisions taken has been where to locate the railway stations relative to the cities that they serve. The resulting improvements in accessibility have had a revolutionary impact on these cities and have conditioned their subsequent growth. This work seeks to quantify this growth in both space and time, using vector GIS indicators. This has been achieved through the creation of geo-referenced databases that combine: railway-station locations, the routes followed by the railway track; and the historical evolution of the urban networks of various Catalan cities between 1850 and 2010. Two other growth indicators, which were subsequently incorporated, related to directionality and the different sectors of each city. Both analyses have shown that, at the majority of locations, there was a strong relationship between urban growth and station location; this validates the hypotheses presented and contributes new arguments to the debate.
