Abstract: This dissertation is about the household registration system, or 'hukou' and its impact on the labor market. The hukou system has been a source of analysis and discussion in academia and in the media in the last decade. The hukou system was created in the fifties and is a record of a family's information, including birth, marriage, divorce and deaths. In addition, the hukou sets in which environment a family may have resident status. The type of hukou determines the right to receive government benefits, and the rural population is the most disadvantaged. Despite the reforms and economic transformations that have occurred in China in recent decades, this system remains in force today. The central question of this final master is: what is the impact of the hukou system in the Chinese labor market today?
