Abstract: This article examines the type of popularity that various kinds of people obtain via the internet. They are anonymous people who, thanks to their activities on the web, have been able to gain a wide public following for their music, videos or personal blogs. Thus, the fact that any user with access to the internet can share their own material via social web platforms, and that the basic form of distribution is word of mouth would seem to represent a new landmark in the perception of what is now possible in terms of anyone becoming a celebrity. In this article, we look at the extent to which we can consider popularity on the web to be based on more democratic foundations than the ways in which people achieved celebrity in the past.
