Abstract: Some impressive figures give us an idea of the extent to which contemporary religious communities have embraced the internet and the new information and communication technologies (ICTs) as tools for religious expression. With this article, I attempt to familiarize the Catalan audience with the main academic literature produced in the field of study of religion and the Internet that has dealt with this growing phenomenon. I also introduce the concept of religious shaping of technologies developed by Campbell (2005a) to understand how religious users often frame technologies so as to make them religiously acceptable. In subsequent sections, I set out some of the main approaches, topics, and findings on the study of religion and the internet to point out that, despite the embryonic stage of this field of study, it is increasingly becoming an established and recognised area of research. I conclude that the literature on religion and the Internet has undergone a similar evolution to that on computer-mediated communication.
