Abstract: The evaluation of the individual characteristics of students in Primary education is very important for the correct teaching-learning process. In this paper we have considered proposing teaching and learning methodologies to suit different maturational profiles of students in the Third cycle of Primary education to prevent academic difficulties arithmetic/mathematics. In order to respond to this objective, we have carried out a review of the literature on biological maturation, the importance of assessing it, the factors that influence it and its indicators. In the same way we have carried out an investigation that combines the descriptive, correlational and ex post-facto methods. The study was conducted on a sample of 91 discentes a public center Sevilla that calculated the biological age by using the regression equations to predict the peak height velocity (PHV) as the method proposed by Mirwald, Baxter-Jones, Bailey and Beunen (2002). The results obtained allow us to describe the statistically significant relationship between the biological maturation of students and their school grades in the area of mathematics; and the possible differences according to the sex variable. The results obtained show a consistent relationship of biological age with school grades in mathematics, but also the non-existence of differences between sexes. This led us to a methodological proposal focused on biological maturation as a starting point to teach mathematics and prevent academic difficulties in arithmetic/mathematics.
