Abstract: Stroke is the most common neurological pathology and the second most frequent cause of death in the Spanish population. This disease causes different types of alterations that affect the quality of life of people and their families. One of the symptoms suffered is swallowing difficulty or dysphagia. This can lead to malnutrition, dehydration, aspiration or pneumonia, and even death. One of the professionals involved in their intervention are speech therapists. Their role is to promote safe and effective swallowing, and to this end, they have different intervention techniques at their disposal. Given the wide variety of existing techniques, there is currently a great deal of controversy about the most effective speech therapy techniques for people with dysphagia after stroke. This situation is having a negative impact on the recognition of speech therapists in multidisciplinary teams. The aim of the present study was to carry out a literature review of traditional and innovative neurostimulation techniques in order to analyze and compare their efficacy and to provide an updated review of the most effective techniques. Likewise, the aim was also to contribute to the acceptance and implementation of the evidence by speech-language pathologists within hospital multidisciplinary teams. Among the results obtained, it has been concluded that both traditional techniques (compensatory and rehabilitative) and innovative neurostimulation techniques (NMES and rTMS) are more effective when both are combined during the treatment of people with dysphagia due to stroke.
