Title: | Retraducción entre épocas. Análisis de las traducciones al español de la obra Der Zauberberg (La montaña mágica) |

Abstract: | In this final degree project, it is analysed some contrastive aspects of the two existing Spanish translations of one of the greatest masterpieces of literature in the world by the German writer Thomas Mann: Der Zauberberg (La montaña mágica). After a brief reminder of the key elements of any literary translation, the most relevant aspects of the two translations are discussed from a contrastive-comparative point of view, as well as the translation strategies and techniques that have been used in both versions. It must be taken into consideration, that the first translation was published in 1934, and the second one in 2005. The seventy-year gap between the two translations contains a turbulent period of enormous changes in 20th century world history. Society in 2005 was very different from that reflected by the German author and the first Spanish translator in the work, so the challenge of the second translation lies in how to bring the essence of Mann’s thought to readers, who were already from a different time while making the text of the second translation more approachable and engaging to them. In that sense, what has the retranslation brought to the work? |
