Abstract: | Introduction: It is necessary to identify risk eating habits to control the rise in the prevalence of childhood overweight and guarantee the right to health of the child. For this, the use of validated instruments in family and school contexts is required. Objective: Validate a subscale Eating Habits in Children (SEHAN Spain version), for use in Spanish school children between 10 and 12 years. Method: The subscale psychometric properties were studied into 3 sections: validity and logic of content, reliability and internal consistency, and criterial validity. In the first section involved a group of 5 experts who assessed the adequacy, clarity, coherence and relevance of the instrument, and also it was calculed canonical coefficient concordance (CCC) in the response. Re-tes methodology was used in the second section. 134 students who completed the Subescale two times were involved in this part, with a period of 14 days between both measurements. Intraclass Correlation Coefficient (ICC), the Spearman correlation coefficient (SCC ) and the homogeneity of the results with Wilcoxon test was calculed. Finally, 187 students participated in the criteria validity, which completed only one time the subscale. In addition, they took the height, weight and triceps skinfold to estimate the SCC between anthropometric variables and their final score on the subscale. Result: The Subscale has 27 items. 16 about Food Quality (CA) and 11 Food Consumption Frequency (FCA). The experts scores was: 3.89 for CA, 3.98 to FCA and 3.94 for all the Subscale (out of 4 possible points). The CCC was 100% for CA, 75.75% for FCA, and 83.04% to the total the Subscale. The Wilcoxon test result (p <.05) for all the Subscala. ICC> .06 was obtained in 81.86% of the subscale. ICC (range .467- .914) was obtained for 25 of the 27 items. ICC only was poor for items "not eating" and "No Dinner". To 25 of the 27 variables, CCS (range .350- .777) (p <.01). The "No dinner" item obtained a CCS .173 (p <.05), and only the item "Do not eat" was CCS (p> .05). Conclusions: This subscale is a highly viable tool, has an excellent validity and logic content, with adequate reliability and internal consistency. We recommend the use of this Subscale in children between 10 - 12 years old by the psychometric properties that are showed in this study |
